about

After I finished recording this song I felt like it could have been recorded by They Might Be Giants in their dial-a-song days. Granted, a harmonica is a far cry from an accordion, but the carefree, brash and self-satirical style of the instrumental solos, combined with the genuinely knowledgeable and always questioning nature of the lyrics really felt like it was reaching some of the same heights.

I've always looked up to They Might Be Giants. Flood is my ultimate beach party album (with apologies to King Missile). I learned from They Might Be Giants that you can be cool, without giving up on being a nerd. You can rock a mic the same way you rock geology--with science.

Part of what inspired me to try to record a new, original song every day for the rest of my twenties is their story of how they started out recording new songs each day on an answering machine.

I've been blessed to have some usable studio equipment and a couple of great instruments. I should at least be able to try as hard as they did with a guitar, an accordion and an answering machine.

As for the lyrics, I've really been thinking a lot about Dick Cheney lately, and how hard it must have been for the heartless old hunter to keep toeing the party line, or how hard it must be for his daughter...

I think all of my songs, in some way or another, are probably about Dick Cheney. That's probably the biggest lesson I've learned in the first week of this project. Dick Cheney is a very important part of all of us.

lyrics

The direction the electrons flow is opposite the way that the arrows show/'cause we've been drawing these same backwards pictures since back when we really didn't know. // There was never an easy time to erase and redraw perpendicular tiny lines/on every diagram and every schematic so scientists agreed not to care // Now each electrical engineer knows how to speak of up as down and north as south / just like bad actors whose hearts and mouths conduct contrary conversations

Eli Resnick: harmonica, vocals, guitar, bass? Did I play bass on this? No one else did. I can tell you that much. Is it on there? It's been a couple days. I also picked a good drum-loop, recorded and mixed the song. Oh, you know what? I played electric guitar for the rhythm part, and acoustic for the solo. Because that's how it's done, son.
