I really don't like speeding tickets. I am a safe driver because I can get my band to LA without running anybody over. If people want to hide on the side of the road and complain about how quickly I can safely drive, well, my sympathies lie elsewhere.
lyrics
Want to know the secret of success?/Don't think too much about happiness./Don't focus on what you want out of life./ Just slow down, do what you're told and walk right//cause the meek ain't waiting to inherit the earth/they're teaming with the weak and they're taking it by force/easy to see how this country's ravaged/land of the free under the laws of average/in the city on the hill if you want your reward/get yourself and ugly beat up ford/cruise through life with nowhere to go/pay your bills on time and drive real slow//want to know the secret of a happy marriage?/Shut up and tell her how pretty her hair is./Want know just how to meet the girl of your dreams?/You dirty old man! You know she's just in her teens!/You say you want a party that never stops?/Pull yourself together and tell it to the cops.
Too many protest songs are about big things that we can't seem to change. This one is about speeding tickets and credit reports--little things that sound good in principle, but can snowball on poor people. If I call it a protest song, can it still be a country song? Or do country musicians just complain?
