If you only buy one album in your life, it should probably be Lucinda's "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road." If you buy two, add her "World Without Tears." And if you buy three albums in your life, I hope you'll strongly consider my solo debut, 64x30, especially now, while it's still incomplete and free.
Spoiler alter! Spoiler alert on this paragraph only: My lyrics for this song include quotes from her songs, (in order) "How Would Broken Find the Bones," "Metal Firecracker," "Lake Charles," and obviously, "Drunken Angel." There's also an allusion to the beautiful arithmetic of "2 kool 2 Be 4-gotten."
If I could have still called it original, I would have also quoted "Right In Time," in its entirety. But this is an original project. The blues is about borrowing, leaning on the shoulder of someone strong and getting by with a little help from your friends, but you can't just pick up someone else's song and call it your own.
I asked Lucinda for permission to quote her, on her facebook wall on August 5th, 2010. I hope she checks it. Meanwhile, this song, like the album it's part of, is free. Enjoy and appreciate the tradition of American folk music.
lyrics
She says when I listen to Lucinda Williams, she can see me thinking of other women
I tell her no way baby. You know I'm just listening.
She says when I listen to Lucinda Williams, she can see me thinking of other women
I say I'm just wishing I sounded more like Lucinda
"Once we [lived] together," "in a world without tears,"
"and I would hold you close, take away your fears"
She says when I listen to Lucinda Williams, she can see me thinking of other women
I tell her I'd sell my soul so I could play guitar like Lucinda
She says when I listen to Lucinda Williams, she can see me thinking of other women
I don't know how to ask whether we count Lucinda
I know better than to ask where you learned to read my mind
and I never meant to be unkind
She says when I listen to Lucinda Williams, she can see me thinking of other women
I tell her darling, "Drunken Angel," I'd never put no one above you
She says when I listen to Lucinda Williams, she can see me thinking of other women
I say that look in my eye is a sigh--a sign of how much I love you
