It's in 5. Like "Take 5." And not much else in Western music.
But what really makes this track for me is the complimentary keyboard basslines on slightly different samples, hard-panned in opposite directions.
If counting five beats instead of four isn't jarring enough, try listening through headphones and dancing to a different bass line in each ear, played on different instruments.
This is a song about getting ready to grow up and start a family, and worrying about becoming a buzz kill, one day. Too many rock songs are from the perspective of kids trying to get one over on their parents. Would it break down the structure to have one that's the opposite? I don't know, but it's worth a try.
Take that, authorities of rock.
lyrics
You'd better disinvite your houseguest. Turn that so-called music down.
You'd better disinvite your houseguest. Turn that so-called music down.
Your sleepover's been cancelled. Your dad ain't leaving town.
You got so much to live for, someday I hope you're gonna wed
You got so much to live for, someday I hope you're gonna wed
But for tonight you're grounded. So do the dishes, make your bed, clean the bathroom, (fold the lauindry, scrub the bathtub)
Disinvite your houseguest...
Thought I raised you up to respect yourself, never put your needs behind anyone else
Thought I raised you up to respect yourself, never put your needs behind anyone else
Well, listen to your father, and keep your hands to yourself.
