So, I wrote this as a tough guy song. You know, one chord, heavy bass drum on the one and three. Beer.
But then I decided to ask myself, what would it sound like if the Postal Service sang about how they liked kicking asses?
It's not so much a parody. It's just a question. I want to know if people can overcome some normative preconceptions about the social and physical implications of genre.
It's like, why is it that a band has to have a certain beat to get played at a football game or a hockey game? If I write a song about fighting, and it has a synthesized organ riff that, at a low enough sample rate, sounds like it came from the original Zelda cartridge, how does that mean I can't beat you up?
There are plenty of violent video gamers, and there are plenty of violent people who enjoy quiet music. To the extent that our society already glorifies its tough, brave side, I think we should expand the sound-track for that. Tough people have ears and hearts just like the rest of you. And you better recognize that about us. Dig?
lyrics
I'm a regular guy.
From a regular town.
Don't be asking me why
Up is up. Down is down.
I'm just a regular guy.
And I don't need to be right
Cause if you and I disagree
You know we're gonna fight
If you want trouble
That's what you've found
If you're seeking sympathy
'fraid we've run fresh out
You can ask me questions all day long
I only know one thing true
If you got problems with me
Then I got problems with you
I'm a regular guy
From a regular town
Find yourself in my way
Find yourself shot down
Hey, pal.
No, I insist.
The pleasure was all mine.
And that's the way it's gonna be.
According to me.
Y'all come right back now y'hear
I'm a regular guy
From a regular town
I keep it on the up and up,
so down with down.
Down with down.
Down with down.
